Animal Care and Adoption Specialist

The ACAS will be responsible for the daily care of resident shelter animals, intake of new shelter animals, customer service, and facilitating adoptions. The ACAS will also be responsible for other duties including, but not limited to, general cleaning of shelter areas, laundry, prepping animal enrichment, stocking, unpacking orders, data entry, returning voicemails, scheduling appointments, and other projects identified by management.

This position requires the ability to work independently and also as a member of a team, a positive attitude, and strong attention to detail.

Responsibilities Include:

 Feeding, cleaning and care of animals and building as needed, including spot cleaning of animal and public areas throughout the day.

 Stocking and organization of shelter areas.

 Preparing animals for adoption (includes, but not limited to: taking pictures, writing profiles, editing computer database, and completing paperwork)

 Monitoring the health of the animals on an ongoing basis and immediately reporting any health problems or conditions (medical or behavioral) to the Clinic or management.

 Working with, training and supervising volunteers

 Willingness and ability to learn the computer database program used to track animals in the shelter.

 Willingness and ability to learn about cat, dog, and small animal behavior, common issues, and ways to address them in order to advise pet owners and to keep animals in homes.

 Treating all animals and people humanely, properly, and with compassion at all times, regardless of the situation or circumstance.

 Working courteously and cooperatively with other staff members, volunteers, and the public.

Specific Job Skills:

 Strong interpersonal skills. The ideal person for this job would be personable, outgoing, patient, professional, and able to get along well with a variety of people.

 Experience with animal care specifically that of dogs, cats and small animals.  Excellent written and oral communications skills.

 Generalized computer and database proficiency

 Ability and initiative, working with minimal supervision and direction.  Maturity, good judgment and a professional personal appearance.

 Ability to read, write and understand English.

 Flexibility, ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize them.

 The ability to remain pleasant and calm even in stressful situations.

 Comfort and ability to work with animals of unknown disposition and those who may exhibit medical and/or other problems, as well as aggressive tendencies.

Educational Requirements:

Two years of volunteer or work experience with animals preferred.

Customer service experience preferred.


32 hrs/week, with accruable PTO hours after a 60 day probationary period.

Availability and a willingness to work a flexible schedule are a plus.

Includes weekend and holiday work. Must be at least 18 years of age and have valid driver’s license.

$9.60 – $10.00 per hour, DOE.
