The Chief Technology Officer (CTO) provides the vision for the strategic development and management of information resources and technology to support the achievement of Farm Sanctuary’s mission. The CTO leads the Information Technology Department and works with other members of executive management to leverage technology to expand the organization’s impact, improve business processes, and attain strategic goals. The CTO will lead big picture initiatives, while also working at the tactical level.  This position reports to the CEO/Executive Director and is responsible for supervising one full time employee.

Responsibilities/Duties

  • Establish the company’s technical vision and lead all aspects of the company’s technological development.
  • Manage web development for the organization’s many web properties, mostly in WordPress, working in collaboration with the Chief Communication, Content and Brand Creative Officer.
  • Manage web hosting, email hosting, network infrastructure, computer support, phone systems, internet service, and servers, among other technology-related systems across the organization’s multiple locations (in CA, NY & NJ) and for distributed remote staff across the country.
  • Evaluate and select all software applications for use across the organization.
  • Advise other department leaders regarding technologies that may improve their efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Develop and maintain IT department budget for annual operating expenses and any technology capital projects.
  • Develop training and/or written support materials for use by staff at varying levels of technological proficiency.
  • Manage information security, including a strategy to handle IT security threats, implementing critical enhancements, and development of policies regarding data collection, storage, transfer and archive.
  • Conduct research on leading edge technologies and make determinations on the probability of implementation.
  • Oversee and direct any consultants that provide technology support for software development, database design, hardware support, and any other IT services.
  • Develop a thorough disaster recovery and business continuity plan.
  • Work with the Finance team on the technology aspects of maintaining Payment Card Industry compliance.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required; master’s degree in related field preferred
  • 10+ years of experience in technology roles
  • Prior experience as Chief Technology Officer or in a similar technology leadership role strongly preferred
  • Experience with UI design and user-centric application development principles
  • Experience writing, developing, implementing and improving upon software code
  • Experience working with internal stakeholders to identify programmatic goals, conduct needs assessments, and evaluate and implement technology solutions
  • Experience managing staff required; experience managing remote staff preferred
  • Knowledge of cloud technologies and digital marketing
  • Current comprehensive knowledge of IT subjects and extensive knowledge of hardware and software

Specifications:

  • Full-time; exempt position
  • Position to be based in Farm Sanctuary’s downtown Los Angeles office or from a remote home office within the state of CA, NY or NJ
  • Work schedule may vary; regular evening, weekend and holiday availability required
  • This position requires travel to Farm Sanctuary locations as needed, and to meetings when requested
