Position Summary/ Objective

The Community Engagement Manager, as part of the Community Animals team, will support strategic direction and implementation of projects, campaigns and initiatives that ultimately benefit people, domestic animals and wildlife. The Manager of Community Engagement will work closely with the Community Animals team, Program Directors, Regional Directors, country office and field staff to shape strategy, best practices and policies in long-term community animal welfare projects, and promote opportunities to meet program goals through community engagement. The Manager collaborates closely with the Manager of Disaster Response to create and manage opportunities for seamless integration of disaster response, recovery and long-term engagement opportunities in key regions.  The Community Engagement Manager will represent IFAW as a global expert as needed, participate in internal and external meetings to represent Community Animals strategies, and liaise with fundraising, communications and supporter relations departments regularly to ensure that Program activities are well coordinated across IFAW’s strategic objectives.

Role and Responsibilities

  • Identify and develop strategic opportunities, in collaboration with field staff, to develop projects which improve community welfare and engagement around IFAW goals through projects and campaigns which enhance the welfare of domestic animals.
  • Support strategic development, planning, monitoring, training and day-to-day aspects of global Community Animals projects in collaboration with field staff.
  • Identify and promote opportunities, as a topic expert, for IFAW regional offices to advance their objectives in community animal welfare and conservation through the establishment of community-based projects.
  • Support IFAW departments (Philanthropy, Online Campaigns & Marketing, Finance, Communications, etc.) in achieving IFAW institutional goals through Community Animals projects.
  • Work seamlessly with and as part of IFAW’s Disaster Response teams to provide hands-on support, advice, and strategic input to ensure that opportunities to support response, recovery and long-term engagement are realized.
  • Assist Program Director in supporting field staff in project and professional development, coordinating program messages and expertise, and ensuring progress in reporting success of field projects through quarterly reports, stories, written and video documentation and formal research.
  • Work closely with Communications and fundraising staff in the development and implementation of media strategies, public awareness activities and fundraising initiatives in order to meet program and institutional objectives.
  • Fully support IFAW’s global strategy of rescue-rehabilitate-release by focusing on creating safe habitats for domestic animals and communities in key IFAW geographies, through open and engaged collaboration with IFAW staff across departments, regions and program areas.

 Qualifications and Education Requirements

  • At least 7 years’ experience working with underserved communities, nonprofit project management, and/or hands-on animal welfare, preferably with an emphasis on animals supporting livelihoods.
  • Demonstrated project management, budget management and personnel mentorship skills.
  • Expertise in one or more areas related to animal welfare and conservation, with additional expertise in community engagement, leadership, planning and monitoring a plus.
  • Advanced degree in the sciences preferred.
  • Excellent command of English. A skill in one or more other relevant languages is an advantage.
  • Excellent organizational and strategic skills, with experience planning, budgeting and monitoring projects in multiple global sites, and in prioritizing effectively.
  • Strong problem solving skills, able to effectively analyze problems and provide creative workable solutions.
  • Excellent communicator, both verbally and in writing. Ability to interact harmoniously and communicate effectively with people (both internally and externally) from varying educational, social and cultural backgrounds.
  • Able to work interdependently, optimizing the skills available within the team.
  • High level of professionalism – the mix of dependability, initiative, industry and ability to make sound judgments, within agreed guidelines, that will earn respect and achieve success in chaotic, fast moving and high pressure environments. Ability to adapt to working in varied environments and to handle high or chronic stress situations.
  • Commitment to animal welfare and promoting IFAW’s mission preferably with experience in the field of animal welfare or conservation.
  • Able and willing to travel anywhere in the world, occasionally on short notice, work long hours, and live in difficult conditions.
