Director of Development and Communications

This creative and innovative person will work with executive leadership to plan and execute fundraising and communication strategies to elevate and enhance Catskill Animal Sanctuary’s image and position. The Director of Development and Communications is responsible the creation and oversight of a comprehensive development plan that includes major gifts, grants, on-line and traditional appeals, member cultivation, working with the ED and Board of Directors to cultivate and solicit major gifts. The position is also responsible for strategic messaging and the development and management of a comprehensive communications plan that promotes the organization’s mission, brand, people and services in a way that distinguishes it from all others.  She/he will provide leadership and supervision to staff in their roles to attain success.

The ideal candidate will be an innovator with superior writing and editing skills, as well as outstanding interpersonal and organizational skills.  This role reports to the Deputy Director and will frequently engage with the Executive Director/Founder in leveraging her role in advancing the organization’s mission.

 

Who We Are:

Catskill Animal Sanctuary is a 148-acre refuge in New York’s Hudson Valley for eleven species of farmed animals rescued from cruelty, neglect, and abandonment opened in 2001 by founders Kathy Stevens and Jesse Moore. In addition to direct animal aid, the Sanctuary offers signature programming aimed at encouraging our guests and the world at large to adopt a plant-based lifestyle.  Programing includes customized tours, a vegan cooking program, mentor and youth leadership programs, which are positioned to become national models. In addition to programming, the historical Homestead building serves as a Bed and Breakfast venue for guests to enjoy a more in-depth and personal experience of the Sanctuary.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement strategies for recruiting, cultivating, and stewarding individual donors, including strategies to engage and retain new donor stakeholders and increase major gifts
  • Advance and maintain relationships with corporations and implements strategies to increase corporate giving
  • Lead the planning and implementation of development goals, strategies, and activities relating to the identification, research, cultivation, and solicitation of prospective donors
  • Work closely with staff, leadership and board to educate and engage them in donor solicitation and the entire fundraising process
  • Oversee development team in writing and editing of grants, proposals, reports and other materials
  • Conceive, plan and oversee marketing and public relations strategies to promote brand, increase visibility and participation in programs, services and activities
  • Establishes, implements and regularly reviews a comprehensive organizational public relations and development plan that increases Catskill’s image and position
  • Responsible for direction, production and distribution of all marketing and communications collateral to support fundraising, programs and events across all formats and channels
  • Successfully market the organization and its departments to internal and external stakeholders
  • Prepare and act upon marketing plans for planned events to engage support and participation
  • Responsible for writing content, editing and coordinating staff and vendors to produce all print, digital and social media activities
  • Ensures integration of staff with other organization teams through supervision of staff, consultants and volunteers to meet goals
  • Manages performance, offers coaching, guides professional development, and provides structured feedback
  • Serves as a steward of the organization’s brand and leads marketing efforts as the organization’s representative with the media

  • Ability to leverage media contacts to serve the growth needs of the organization
  • Strong creative, strategic, analytical, and organizational skills
  • Sophisticated writing, editing, messaging, and framing talents that have demonstrated success and can be used as a model for others
  • Aptitude for cultivating collaborative relationships with staff, donors and partner organizations that fosters a culture of excellence
  • Robust time and project management skills with the ability to manage multiple projects, timelines and priorities
  • A strong vision and desire for personal growth with a positive attitude

 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university with a Master’s degree preferred in marketing, public relations or related field
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in major gift fundraising, communications or public relations with a preference of at least of 2-years’ in a senior management role
  • Strong track record of success in leading fundraising efforts from a broad base of stakeholders, including individuals, foundations, and events
  • Proven ability to lead communications efforts and execute advocacy-related, profile-raising and development-related communications
  • Excellent communication, public speaking, and writing skills
  • Proficiency in MSOffice and familiarity with fundraising and/or donor management software
  • CFRE certification preferred
