MISSION: The Pennsylvania SPCA is a nonprofit animal welfare organization founded in 1867 located in Philadelphia. Our mission is to protect animals, prevent cruelty, and improve the health and quality of life for animals in Pennsylvania.

SUMMARY: The Director of Planned Giving’s central focus will be to grow the PSPCA’s planned gift expectancy pool by securing new/additional outright & deferred gifts, and gift expectancies on behalf of the Pennsylvania SPCA. To fulfill this role, the Director of Planned Giving will oversee the development and implementation of a comprehensive program and will manage a portfolio of current/prospective donors; and will work with professional financial advisors and executors to help expedite the philanthropic wishes of their clients. The Director will also cultivate, solicit and steward a small portfolio of both planned giving donors and major gift donors.

Planned Giving

·      Manage the internal operations of the office of planned giving, including, but not limited to, administration and tracking of all bequest expectancies from estate documentation through estate closure (documented, pending, open and closed). This involves working with attorneys and trustees, and tracking and managing information regarding potential and confirmed estate gifts.

·      Responsible for planed giving donor prospecting to secure new gifts from both existing and new donors. Will be expected to travel to meet with donors.

·      Manage the production of 2 Direct Mail pieces targeted toward potential planned gift donors. Will work with marketing and development teams to produce.

·      Document conversations and contacts with donors, volunteers, board members, financial advisors, attorneys, etc. in Raisers Edge

·      Track and manage all planned giving information, policies and strategies.

·      Oversee gifts from various forms of trusts managed by outside trustees.

·      Manage, document and solicit gift annuities. Execute gift annuity contracts and provide the necessary disclosure statements.

·      Manage, communicate with, market and steward the 1867 Society.

·      Develop a pet benefit program for all planned giving donors that provide estate documentation.

·      Provide stock donation instructions to donors and prospects. Communicate stock donations to the Controller. Document appropriate information in Raisers Edge and in stock folder.

·      Communicate with in-kind donors, providing in-kind donation forms at time of donation.

·      Collaborate with colleagues in development, finance, communications and other departments to ensure the success of the planned giving effort.

·      Design, manage and complete new projects that develop at any given time, including projects that relate to donors, financial advisors, board reports, or analysis of some specific area within the planned giving area.

·      Compose and prepare routine correspondence and presentations, including letters, and bequest expectancy reports.

·      Use the development database to research donors and their gift histories.

Major Gift Donors

  • Will successfully manage a portfolio of approximately 75 mid ($5,000 – $9,999) and major ($10,000+) gift prospects.
  •  Responsible for donor cultivation and stewardship through direct contact with donors (hosting tours, off-site meetings, written communications, etc.)
  • Utilize PSPCA donor database as well as external sources for donor prospecting and acquisition.
  • Help plan, support, and participate in various development let events throughout the year.
  • Effective collaboration and partnership with PSPCA colleagues
  • Understand current and evolving trends in major-gift giving, solicitation and fundraising campaigns.

·      Recording activities, contacts, proposals and strategic plans in Raisers Edge

Educational Requirements:

·      Bachelor’s degree, preferably in business, communications, marketing, accounting, or pre-law. CFRE or additional certification is a plus.



·      A minimum of seven years of progressive non-profit experience, with experience in development, planned giving, banking, communications, law, account management, and/or related fields

·      Familiarity with Pennsylvania’s planned giving laws and legislation

·      Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously

·      Excellent written and verbal communication skills

·      Strong organizational, planning, and critical thinking skills

·      Strong computer skills including experience with fundraising databases

·      Willingness and ability to travel within Pennsylvania to meet with prospects

IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR: Executive Director of Philanthropy

FLSA STATUS: EXEMPT POSITION Minimum of 8 hours per day, 40 hours per week. Daily hours and days of the week may vary according to the needs of the department schedule. Includes weekends, night, holiday and on-call work.

INTRODUCTORY ASSESSMENT PERIOD: The introductory assessment period runs from the date of hire for three months thereafter. For employment in any position with the Pennsylvania SPCA, this introductory assessment period is the period during which the specifics of the job are learned. During this period, either the employee or the Pennsylvania SPCA may end the employment relationship without notice or prejudice.

EMPLOYMENT: There is no minimum period of employment guaranteed or implied by acceptance of an employment offer. It is the policy of Pennsylvania SPCA that even exempt positions are governed by the needs of the agency, which means that employment is for no specified term and either the Pennsylvania SPCA or the employee, may terminate that employment at any time. The Chief Executive Officer has final authority over these decisions and determinations.
