Over the past few years, The Humane League has positioned itself for sustained growth and success in our mission to reduce the suffering of farm animals. We have a current staff size of 60+ dispersed across the US and internationally.

The Humane League seeks a Donor Relations Manager to sustain this growth and expand the base of support by building individual giving through major donor cultivation and special events. This is a full-time, remote position based in the San Francisco Bay area with moderate  travel. This position reports to the VP, Development.

Primary Duties

The Donor Relations Manager will spend the  majority of time in direct contact  with donors, both in-person and via email/phone, helping match donors’ interests with the organization’s needs, as well as time behind the scenes, assessing next steps for individual donor engagement to build the donor relationship with The Humane League.

Portfolio Management and Donor Stewardship

  • Manage a portfolio of approximately 150 donors and prospects that research shows are qualified for $1,000 – $20,000 gifts.
  • Create and implement a comprehensive plan for each donor/prospect in the portfolio.
  • Directly solicit major and planned gifts, and partner with senior staff on donor engagement opportunities.
  • Provide support to senior staff in preparation for solicitation or stewardship opportunities, including appropriate, concise briefing materials in advance of meetings with donors and prospects.
  • Qualify new prospects for assignment to the campaign portfolio on quarterly basis.
  • Work with the appropriate staff to secure project information and use this information to develop materials directed at individual donors/prospects, such as proposals and reports that are in line with donor interests and programmatic priorities.
  • Develop and execute special cultivation and stewardship opportunities, such as house parties in key cities.


●Two or more years of directly applicable professional experience in individual fundraising (mid-level/major gift solicitation experience preferred)

● Understanding of the issues: applicants should be familiar with issues related to factory farming and vegetarianism/veganism

●Strong ability to communicate persuasively, both verbally and in writing

● Experience in Project Management, including establishing project scope, timelines, and execution

● Outstanding organizational skills with a high level of attention to detail

● Experience with donor databases and research tools

● Ability to maintain the highest degree of confidentiality regarding all aspects of work at all times

● Ability to maintain composure, flexibility, and a sense of humor under tight deadlines

● Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously, prioritize activities, and be flexible in adjusting expectations as new developments occur

● Ability to travel to support relationships and events as required
