Purpose of Position:

The Human Resource Generalist organizes and coordinates all aspects of PAWS’ Human Resource needs, is a point of contact for employees needing assistance with such functions and is the liaison to outsiders regarding them.

Primary Duties:

·        Maintains all employee records, personnel files and other information about employees as required by law or PAWS’ policies.


·        Prepares payroll for production by outside vendor.


·        Manages PAWS employee benefit packages, including health, disability, 401(k), life insurance, reporting and file maintenance, during annual open enrollment and throughout the year.


·        Works directly with managers and directors to assist them in carrying out their responsibilities related to HR policies.


·        Oversees and implements recruiting activities, and coordinates with hiring managers.


·        Coordinates employee evaluations with managers to ensure they are completed at the designated times and in a timely manner.


·        Develops and coordinates on-boarding process to ensure the best possible transition into the organization for new employees.


·        Responsible for keeping HR documents (employee manual, employment posters, etc.) updated.


·        Manages separation process to minimize unemployment claims.


·        Oversees workers’ compensation activities and coordinates as needed with the outsource HR vendor.


·        Maintains reports for PAWS as needed including all injury reports, worker’s compensation, unemployment and OSHA.


·        Periodically updates and revises materials distributed to staff to help in the continued orientation and education about the organization and the job responsibilities of each staff member.


·        Researches and coordinates staff training opportunities.


·        May perform other duties as required.


Controls Over Work:

·        The Human Resources Generalist works under the general direction of the Chief Operating Officer and is expected to pursue the established duties without detailed supervision.


·        Written performance evaluations will be given after the first three months and annually thereafter.



·        Must have a college degree and a minimum of 2 years Human Resources experience.


·        PHR or SHRM-CP Certification preferred.


·        The ability to juggle demands, prioritize, and follow through to timely completion.


·        Must understand and execute the essentials of human resource management, benefits administration, conflict resolution, and other key H.R. responsibilities. Must be able to work maturely and respectfully with diverse groups of people and represent PAWS professionally at all times.


·        Willingness to consult openly and regularly with the Office Manager and COO on matters relating to definition and accomplishment of human resources tasks.


·        Desire for learning and mastery regarding presently required job skills as well as to enlarge the scope and professionalism of this position.


·        Excellent written and oral communication skills; ability to communicate effectively and to project professional image in writing, in person and over the phone.


·        Speed and experience with all Microsoft Office applications are necessary.


·        Must maintain a high level of confidentiality and have a tactful, mature and sincere attitude.


·        Must have or be able to obtain a valid Washington driver’s license with no major or repeated minor traffic offenses.


·        Preference to supervisory/management experience including personnel supervision.
