Rainforest Trust seeks a Manager of Protected Areas Management to oversee our strategic support for the creation and management of new protected areas for Key Biodiversity Areas across the tropics. This position will lead a team dedicated to providing technical support and monitoring Protected Areas across the tropics, including reviewing management plans and enforcement measures, strengthening partner capacity in PA management, and monitoring and evaluation of all protected areas supported by Rainforest Trust.

The successful candidate will be a career conservation professional with a proven track record in effective protected areas management, extensive experience in managing protected areas across the tropics as well as experience in assessing institutional capacity needs to ensure effective management of protected areas. The position works under the supervision of the Chief Conservation Officer. The position will be based at our spectacular rural conservation campus at Airlie in Northern Virginia – an hour west of Washington DC.

Duties for the position include:

  • Oversight, development and management of Rainforest Trust’s Monitoring and Evaluations team
  • Continued development of our long-term monitoring efforts
  • Collaborate with other members of the Conservation team on development and review of new protected area creation projects.
  • Assessment of anticipated management needs of protected areas being created through new projects.
  • Assessment of management challenges facing protected areas created by Rainforest Trust and its conservation partner organizations in Latin America, Africa, Asia, and Oceania.
  • Partner needs assessment and the execution of on-site training to partner organization personnel in areas such as guard training, protected area surveillance, development of management plans, development of site plans for reserve infrastructure, conflict resolution, facilitation and mediation, etc.
  • Collaborate with other members of the Rainforest Trust Conservation team on monitoring the success of existing Rainforest Trust supported protected areas.


·        Degree in biological sciences, wildlife management, or related field. Graduate degree a plus.

·        At least 5 years protected area management experience in the tropics, including developing, improving and overseeing protected area management systems, finance, infrastructure and law enforcement.

·        Proven ability to develop and deliver training course related to protected areas management.

·        Knowledge of IUCN Conservation Tools and understanding of the IUCN protected area categories and criteria.

·        Proven track record in personnel management.

·        Experience working with stakeholders on protected area management.

  • A personal passion for biodiversity conservation and belief in Rainforest Trust’s conservation mission.
  • A talent for program management. An outgoing, positive, persuasive manner and predisposition for collaboration with partners are multiple levels. Demonstrable success in managing programs, effectively advancing multiple projects at the same time, and completing complex projects.
  • Experience with Geographic Information Systems (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS, and Google Earth Engine) a plus.
