Shelter Manager

This full time position is bottom line responsible for the daily operation of the shelter, including animal care, adoption, fostering, and a team of seven employees. This position is under the direct supervision of the Director of Operations. The right candidate will be well organized and detail oriented but able to think strategically and delegate work as needed to develop employees. Professionalism and solution-oriented approach are necessary. Responsibilities include:

Animal Care

  • Manage a team of six animal care attendants with the help of one Assistant Shelter Manager
  • Implementation of animal care protocols (safety, feeding, cleaning, administering of medicine, etc.), including staff training and follow up
  • Perform and manage intake exams for all animals entering the shelter
  • Manage the performance of behavioral assessments of each animal and coding into our tiered system
  • Keep Petpoint updated with all information about each animal, including exams, vaccinations, and outcomes
  • Work with our Veterinarian to implement medical protocols and follow medical regimens
  • Responsible for making sure the shelter is clean, properly stocked, and animals are well taken care of at the end of each day

General Management

  • Manage staff to perform adoptions accurately and with all paperwork and Petpoint filled out correctly
  • Perform regular employee reviews and disciplinary actions when necessary
  • Manage front desk security procedures, such as cash register close out and donation processing
  • Model and enforce good customer service with potential adopters, volunteers, etc.
  • Assist in directing and training volunteers and service groups
  • Other tasks as assigned by Director of Operations or Executive Director


  • At least 1 year experience working in a shelter environment with both cats and dogs of all sizes
  • At least 2 year management/supervising experience
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, Gmail, Google Docs, Google Calendar, and Petpoint
  • Good communication skills and the ability to maintain professionalism under pressure
  • Extremely well organized, strong attention to detail, and great follow-up skills
  • Team player who can be flexible and play nice with peers
  • Prepared for leadership and to hit the ground running
  • Ability to think strategically and understand the big picture of the Refuge, it’s mission and the role it plays in the community



$37,500.00 to $50,000.00


Competitive wage and benefits will be commensurate with experience
