The mission of the Florida Keys Wild Bird Rehabilitation Center is to rescue, rehabilitate, and release native and migratory wild birds that have been harmed or displaced, to provide or locate a humane shelter for those birds that cannot be released, and to educate the public toward the importance of coexistence with all wild bird species.

Job Title: Wildlife Hospital Technician

Reports to: Wildlife Rehabilitation Manager

Job Summary:

The Wildlife Hospital Technician assists the Wildlife Rehabilitators in all aspects of wildlife emergencies, critical care, and daily husbandry of all hospital patients. He/she assists in coordinating rescues, treatment and diet plans along with administering medications and fluids. He/she is responsible for assisting with the training and mentoring of interns and volunteers. This is a full time position and may include evening and weekend hours, and event participation when needed. The FKWBRC maintains a 24/7 emergency response line so the Wildlife Hospital Technician will respond to after hour emergencies on a regular basis.

Essential Duties:

·         Assist rehabilitators in providing the best possible care for our wild rehab patients/permanent residents.

·         Intake patients and assess the patients’ needs.

·         Daily cleaning, feeding, medicating, and wound care of current hospital patients.

·         Assist in surgeries if needed by vet or wildlife rehabilitator and provide unsupervised basic medical procedures /treatments i.e. blood work, medication dosage, physical therapy, and humane euthanasia.

·         Assist in providing training to all Interns and Volunteers.

·         Maintain and dictate intern house cleanliness

·         Be available and respond to bird emergencies when needed 24/7.

·         Keep detailed and organized patient forms. Enter patient data as needed.

·         Be up to date on history and current medical progress on patients and permanent residents to alert wildlife rehabilitators of any changes.

·         Fill in during the absence of any of the Wildlife Rehabilitators, when needed.


Non-Essential Duties:

·         Inform the appropriate party of dwindling supplies at the hospital and intern house. Conduct purchasing trips as necessary.

·         Respond to the public’s curiosity about the organization, i.e. the mission, sanctuary information, patient status, bird advice, etc.

·         Assist with any additional tasks assigned by the Wildlife Rehabilitation Manger.


Job Specifications:

·         Must be able to move around in the hospital 75% of the time.

·         Frequently moves animals, animal cages and animal feed weighing up to 50 pounds in and out of vehicles.

·         When on call, may need to split shifts to stay within the 40-hour work week, resulting in early morning or late evening hours.

·         Occasionally will work in outdoor weather conditions.

·         The FKWBC’s two properties are smoke-free zones; able to respect the smoke-free zones.

·         Must be able to understand why euthanasia is necessary and perform human euthanasia of animals.


Minimum Requirements:

•        Bachelor’s Degree in the biological sciences

•        6 month’s experience in a wildlife rehabilitation setting

•        Experience capturing, handling, and restraining  wild animals, preferably birds

•        Basic knowledge of rehab techniques, protocols, and medical records in a hospital setting

•        Ability to learn and understand basic medical terminology, avian physiology and anatomy

•        Able to exchange accurate information on an individual basis and in group situations plus excellent interpersonal skills for interactions with employees, volunteers, and the public.

•        Basic computer, telephone, data collection and data filing skills

•        Valid driver’s license and clean driving record

Salary: $8.10 hourly

***Free housing is provided in our intern house
